The Incredible Hulk is a 2008 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character the Hulk. The film was directed by Louis Leterrier, with a screenplay written by Zak Penn and Edward Norton, who also starred in the lead role. Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Connelly co-starred in the film. Set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and shared continuity with its predecessor films – Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010) and Thor (2011) – The Incredible Hulk tells the story of Dr. Bruce Banner (Norton), a Nobel prize-winning scientist and former U.S. government weapons test subject who turns into the Hulk whenever he is subjected to severe emotional trauma. The film introduces the Abomination, a creature that is created by gushing out the Hulk's gamma radiation after Banner refuses to detonate a gamma bomb that he has created, and Dr. Emil Blonsky (Pitt), a brilliant physicist who was once Banner's assistant before losing his mind and becoming an enemy of the Hulk following Banner's transformation; as well as his girlfriend Annie (Tyler), who becomes an enemy after she fatally wounds Blonsky, which causes him to transform into The Abomination. The film was released on June 13, 2008 in the United States, despite previous issues with Norton being considered too similar to the Hulk to take over the role, as well as its box office performance being modestly lower than both of its predecessors. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, who praised its action sequences but criticized its story. In South Africa, U.S. soldiers are seen transporting gamma bombs to a bunker underneath Mount Vesuvius before they are destroyed by a meteorite. Months later, Bruce Banner is sitting alone in his room at Culver University's Biological Sciences Building after he learns that he has been chosen to receive the Nobel Prize for his research on gamma radiation. His assistant, Dr. Emil Blonsky, approaches Banner and asks him to travel to Washington D.C. with him to present Banner's research on gamma radiation at the United Nations as part of a panel on "Radiation and Nuclear Security". When Banner declines, he notices that his girlfriend Betty Ross has come into the building and decides to go talk with her. When they reach the lobby of the building, Betty rushes ahead of Banner and allows herself to be captured by S.H.I.E.L.D., refusing to believe that her father General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross is a spy who was sent to recruit Bruce as part of an S.H.I.E.L.D. program to create a government-controlled superhero. Banner and Ross talk, and Banner reluctantly agrees to let them capture him and take him to their S.H.I.E.L.D.-controlled facility as part of the "Super Soldier" program, along with Blonsky, whom Ross has already brought into the S.H.I.E.L.D.-controlled bunker as well; as part of the deal, Ross will sedate Bruce and fix his mind to make him forget everything he has learned since S.H.I.E.L.D.'s takeover at the end of World War II until he regains control over his anger issues after Thaddeus is killed by Captain America (Chris Evans).
